The animal image is appealing to me on many levels. It is the ancient relationship humans have had to them, whether through hunting, fearing, raising, or loving them. The connection between animals and humans is deep, mysterious, often explored, but never fully understood. I have used animal images in my designs on my functional pots for several years. Pottery, too, has had a role in people’s daily lives since time immemorial, and I want my pots to function, while at the same time express some of the life and energy and efficiency of the animal shape.
PROCESS
I buy my clay from a clay company, but from
there on every step of the pottery making process is done by me: Clay
preparation, throwing, decorating, glazing, and firing. I use
white stoneware clay, which I shape on a potter’s wheel, let dry, and
then use brushes to apply colored slips (liquid clay) and wax resist. I
also use a sharp, carbide point to etch thin lines into the unfired
pot. I then bisque fire, dip or pour on a clear glaze and fire again to 2197°F. |
